"Behind the Box"-- What is the shredded wood we've been using to pack our gifts? Well it's actually called "excelsior" and it's form of shredded wood usually from poplar.
It's been used since the 1840's for things such as stuffed animals, upholstery and taxidermy!
I tried this out earlier this year because it's a more sustainable choice then the shredded paper AND the best part is that YOU can reuse it too! Here are 3 things you can do with it:
put some aside to use as a fire starter for your next family bonfire or camping trip
Birds can use it to make their nests, so if you have a bird house or just leave some in your yard and the birds can use for their homes
If you have other animals around, you can use it as bedding and it's absorbent qualities are an added bonus.
